Job description and responsibilities:
The position of Assistant will involve participation in marine research conducted in the area of the Polish Polar Station Hornsund in Spitsbergen (Arctic), in the Baltic Sea, and potentially in other areas. The scope of research topics usually changes very dynamically and depends on the type of scientific projects currently underway. Examples of research topics include: melting and breakup of marine-terminating glaciers, changes in various seawater parameters (physical, chemical, biological), destruction of cliffs and beaches by waves. The person hired for the position of Assistant will be included in a team that conducts field work each year lasting from several weeks to several months. The field research will involve, among other things, operating small boats and pontoons, taking measurements with probes in the glacial bays of Hornsund Fjord, and installing and using various research equipment (e.g., time-lapse cameras, drones, automatic weather stations, sound recorders). After returning from field research, the Assistant's duties will include supporting the staff of the Polar and Marine Research Department in the preparation of sceintific data for release to publicly available databases, as well as caring for research apparatus (maintaining an inventory of apparatus, controlling service needs, etc.). If you have the appropriate qualifications and interests, the work of the Assistant position may also include diving work involving the installation on the seabed of equipment for long-term measurements and their subsequent recovery, as well as the construction and repair of research equipment. As an option, it is also possible to carry out a doctoral thesis, after acquiring the relevant skills and expertise.
