The most important European congress devoted to water issues took place 15-18 February in Warsaw
The 1st IAHR Europe Congress took place in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 2010. The successive editions were in Munich, Germany (2012), Porto, Portugal (2014), Liege, Belgium (2016), Trento, Italy (2018). The 2020 edition, which was supposed to be held in Warsaw in 2020, was postponed to February 2021 due to the pandemic situation. It was taken online and broadcast from several separate studios, with the central studio in the Staszic Palace in Warsaw.
Global interest in water has increased rapidly in recent years. Many water issues are high on the political agenda, whether it concerns the lack of access to safe water and sanitation or the increase in water‐related disasters due to floods and droughts. Therefore the discipline of hydro-environment engineering and research is more important than ever.
The Congress idea was to bring together scientists, practitioners, policymakers and stakeholders to discuss issues related to water. Understanding and protecting water resources. We would like this to be the main goal of our Congress. Hydrology and hydraulics research cannot be separated from environmental science, physics, geophysics etc. That’s why we’ve chosen “No frames, no borders” motto- organizers explained.
During 4 online days, 500 participants from 53 countries discussed the issues of climate change, extreme phenomena such as drought and floods, environmental hydraulics and natural hazards.This congress is a great platform for the exchange of research ideas and the most recent knowledge in the broad area of hydrology, which is practiced by scientists representing various fields, for example: geophysics, mathematics, chemistry. Those researchers should cross boundaries between these disciplines, using various scientific tools to be able to look at water problems from different perspectives” - said Prof. Paweł Rowiński, Vice President of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
Invited lectures,webinars and discussion panels were available to previously registered participants, while the opening and closing ceremony was streamed via social media.
The 6th IAHR Europe Congress was organized under the auspices of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research - IAHR by the Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw University of Life Sciences - SGGW and the Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences with the special commitment of prof. Monika Kalinowska, prof. Michael Nones, prof. Krzysztof Kochanek and prof. Jarosław Napiórkowski.
