Strong Earthquake Strikes Myanmar
Early this morning, at 06:20:54 UTC, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 struck Southeast Asia. The epicenter was located just 17 km from the city of Mandalay in Myanmar.
The event had a strike-slip mechanism, with an almost vertical fault plane oriented either north-south (N-S) or east-west (E-W). Twelve minutes later, a strong aftershock occurred, with a magnitude of 6.4.
Such high magnitudes caused the earthquake to be widely felt across the region – including in Thailand, India, China, and Vietnam. Significant damage is expected in the vicinity of the epicenter.
Both events were recorded by the PLSN seismic network. Below is a figure showing the vertical component recordings from one of the PLSN stations in Poland.
