Celebration of Geophysical Imaging Department Day
On November 19, at the Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IG PAS), we celebrated the Geophysical Imaging Department Day. The meeting was opened by the Head of the Department, Prof. Mariusz Majdański, who warmly welcomed the gathered guests.
Next, Associate Professor Andrzej Górszczyk took the floor to present the scope of the Department's activities and its main research areas. In his speech, he discussed the work of the team, which focuses on topics such as the exploration of mineral resources, including oil and gas, seismic data analysis, various acquisition methods and wavefield modelling.
Individual research by team members was also presented in detail during the event. Dr Brij Singh, who defended his PhD thesis last year (page in PL), presented the results of his studies.
Dr. Wojciech Gajek followed with a presentation of the FROST project: Fibre-optic sensing towards the improvement of environmental monitoring in Svalbard, carried out near the Polish Polar Station in Hornsund. The project uses an innovative technology where a fibre optic cable replaces hundreds of traditional seismic sensors. This advancement provides a new quality of seismic data, enabling a better understanding of seismic activity related to glaciers and permafrost, and providing insights into the changing properties of ice and thawing ground.
The celebration of Geophysical Imaging Department Day was an excellent opportunity to explore the wide range of research conducted by the team and to be inspired by their methods. The event was well attended and allowed participants to gain a deeper understanding of the work carried out by our colleagues in the Geophysical Imaging Department.
