International Day of Tolerance at IG PAS – diversity is our strength!
On November 16th, we celebrate the International Day of Tolerance, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1995 at the initiative of UNESCO. This day is dedicated to respecting, accepting, and appreciating the diversity of cultures and traditions. According to Article I of the Declaration of Principles on Tolerance, tolerance is “harmony in diversity” – a moral duty, a foundation of peace, and a value that builds bridges between people. The celebration of this day also serves as a reminder of the need to combat discrimination and prejudice.
The Institute of Geophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences (IGF PAN) demonstrates that cultural diversity enriches our community. Our team includes employees and doctoral students from 15 different countries around the world. This allows us to exchange knowledge and experiences daily, fostering our professional growth and broadening our horizons.
Today’s world calls for openness, understanding, and collaboration beyond borders. At IGF PAN, we strive to promote the values that underpin our scientific work and daily interactions, showing that cross-border collaboration is not only possible but also highly beneficial. We are guided by the following principles:
- Respect – recognizing and accepting the cultural diversity, beliefs, and perspectives that each person brings.
- Openness – being ready for dialogue, learning from one another, and embracing new viewpoints.
- Collaboration – working together beyond differences to achieve common goals and benefit from team diversity.
- Equality – ensuring everyone has equal opportunities to express themselves and grow, regardless of their background, gender, or religion.
- Solidarity – supporting one another through challenges and building a community based on mutual understanding.
We encourage everyone to join the celebration and reflect on the role of tolerance in our lives.
