Central Geophysical Observatory Belsk

The Geophysical Observatory of the Institute of Geophysics in Belsk began its official activities in 1965. The observatory continues the works of the observatory in Świder, which has been operating since the 1920s. The strong growth of artificial disturbances, mainly of magnetic nature, caused by electrified railway lines of the Warszawa agglomeration, made it necessary to transfer geomagnetic observations from Świder to another location situated not too far from Warszawa, but at the same time with a low level of artificial interference.

The observatory in Belsk is located about 50 km south of Warszawa, in an agricultural area away from urban and industrial developments and electric railways. It is situated on the edge of the Modrzewina nature reserve on an area of about 10 hectares, approximately 2 km away from the village of Belsk Duży.

The observatory conducts continuous measurements in the field of atmospheric physics, geomagnetism and seismology. The observations are supervised by the Department of Atmospheric Physics, the Department of Magnetism and the Department of Seismology.
