Research
The Department of Hydrology and Hydrodynamics is leading in the scientific research in the following areas:
Pollution (including thermal pollution) spreading in rivers
We are constructing and implementing numerical models for the simulation of heat and mass transport in open channels. Among others, two-dimensional River Mixing Model have been developed. These models can be used to simulate pollutant concentration and spreading in the flowing surface waters. We are preparing scientific expertise and forecasts of pollution spreading.
Flow resistance
The evaluation of resistance to flow in open channels poses a fundamental problem of environmental hydrodynamics. The research aims at elaborating the methodology of the friction velocity evaluation during a flood wave propagation. The methodology could be valuable in planning experiments in both natural and laboratory settings, as well as in the process of the friction velocity evaluation based on measurement data. Variable resistance to flow expressed as shear stress or friction velocity affects to large extent evaluation of mass transport – sediment and contaminants. Hence, research in this area may provide in the future more effective methods of mass transport assessment in unsteady flow conditions.
Statistical and stochastic modeling of extreme hydrological events
The analysis of the flood regime and its changes due to anthropogenic factors and climate variability is conducted. Research on improving methods for assessments of probable maximum flow at various spatial and temporal scales under the stationary and non-stationary conditions and by using various sources of information. Assessments and analysis for Polish rivers. Basics of hydrological sizing and determining the risk of objects exposed to large flows (eg. damms, embankments, bridges, culverts, flood plains). Modeling of flood wave hydrographs in terms of water retention. Statistical analysis of low flows. Multivariate analysis of hydrological extreme events.
Climate change impact on hydrological extremes
An estimation of influence of climate changes on extreme flows (droughts and floods), taking into account current and future trends in land use and water management, and evaluation of impact of these changes on flood risk. Research on methods of flood risk assessment (also in future climate) and methods of flood risk management.
